The taper isn't the pause before the important work. It is the important work.
Ten days out, you cut volume just as the plan says, and instead of relief comes anxiety: I'm losing everything I built. It has a name —taper anxiety— and it's nearly universal.
The evidence says the opposite. A 2023 meta-analysis in endurance athletes found tapering consistently improves performance, with gains between 0.5% and 6% depending on the protocol. In a marathon, 2–3% is several minutes.

Cut everything equally and that's when you do detrain. What you sacrifice is volume; intensity stays.
The interesting part is what happens inside while you cut back. Four processes run at once: hormonal balance recovering, glycogen topping up beyond its usual level, blood carrying oxygen more efficiently, and a nervous system that finally gets to rest. The article explains each one →

02 THE MAP OF PRO ATHLETICS

Diamond League, Athlos, Ultimate, World Road Champs: what is each one?
In two weeks there was a brand-new championship in Budapest, a women's series in London, and a World Championship on the streets of Copenhagen. If the elite calendar has become impossible to follow, it isn't you: it has never had this many formats at once. Here's the map.
|
🏟️ ON THE TRACK |
Diamond League |
World Athletics' top one-day meeting series. Around fifteen stops between spring and September, with a final that crowns a champion in each event. The backbone of the season. |
Ultimate Championship |
New in 2026, in Budapest. Only the year's best, in seasons without a World Championship, with the biggest prize money in the sport. This is where Ingebrigtsen skipped the 1500 but won the 5000. |
Athlos |
A women-only series, born in New York in 2024. This year it reached London. Short, built-for-TV format with its own prize purse. |
World Championships |
The most prestigious title after the Olympics. Every two years, in odd years. The next one is 2027. |
🛣️ ON THE ROAD |
World Road Running Champs |
World Athletics, second edition in this format (Riga 2023, Copenhagen 2026). Mile, 5K and half marathon, with individual and team standings. Plus an open mass-participation race on the same course. |
World Marathon Majors |
The big seven: Tokyo, Boston, London, Sydney, Berlin, Chicago and New York. Elites and amateurs on the same start line. Berlin runs this Sunday the 27th; Chicago, on the 11th. |
|
The trend that matters: the line between track and road is blurring. 1500 and 5000 champions racing 5K on asphalt, stadium milers running the road mile. For the everyday runner, the lesson is the one we saw this weekend: every surface has its own language, and even the best have to learn it. |

🇩🇰 COPENHAGEN · WORLD ROAD CHAMPS
A 21-year-old Eritrean beats Ingebrigtsen in the final 100 meters
Ingebrigtsen took the lead with the finish in sight. Dawit Seare, African 5000 champion, answered in the closing stretch: 12:56 to 12:59, a national record for both. Seare then signed a pro contract with NAZ Elite in Flagstaff. Ingebrigtsen ended up flat on the asphalt, in the same city where he collapsed after his half marathon debut two years ago. THE LEAD STORY
A suit with 3D-printed vortex generators
Nike spent six months building Hodgkinson a full-body suit with microstructures that, according to the brand, reduce drag. The principle is real —Formula 1 has used it for decades— but there's no independent data on how much it helps. The verdict: fascinating, and still unproven.
