👋🏻 Hey Reader!
Tuesday July 28 · Regular edition
Back to our regular Tuesday edition — packed with science, running news from around the world, technology and stories of inspiration.
It was an intense week with the MMB. Thank you for being here, edition after edition. Today we shift gears: no altitude, no taper. Today's topic is something very personal to me — running with your kids.
It's not losing training time. Done right, it multiplies it — and science has a lot to say about why.

Science
🧠 You're not teaching them to run — you're teaching them to be
Three studies that change how you think about this: |
📖 Social Learning Theory (Bandura) — applied to movement |
|
Children learn behaviors by observing significant adults — not by listening to their instructions. If they see mom or dad head out for a run in the rain or shine, without drama, that behavior installs itself as the norm. Not the exception. Motivational speeches don't do what silent example does.
|
📖 Long-term cardiovascular effects of endurance exercise |
|
Children who adopt the movement habit in childhood arrive at adulthood with accumulated physiological advantages: higher baseline VO₂max, more robust cardiac adaptations, and lower long-term cardiovascular risk. This isn't about the child's performance today — it's about who they'll be at 40.
|
📖 Athletic identity and exercise adherence in adulthood |
|
Adults who identify as "active people" can almost always trace that identity back to a positive experience with movement in childhood — usually associated with a parent or reference figure. Identity precedes habit. Habit precedes performance.
|
|
The line that changes everything
You're not training your child to run fast. You're training their brain to associate movement with pleasure, connection, and identity. That's worth more than any 5K time.

Application
⚡ How to do it right this week
🚫 Avoid |
|
✗ Pushing them to go faster
✗ Making it competitive
✗ Forcing distances
✗ Criticizing when they walk
|
|
|
✅ What works |
|
✓ Invite them with no expectations
✓ Let them set the pace
✓ Celebrate going out, not the time
✓ Talk while you run
|
|
💡 The conversation rule: if they can talk while running, the pace is right. If they can't, you're going too fast for them — even if it's your zone 1. Adapt to them, not the other way around. |

My kids have seen me head out for a run in the rain, in the sun, tired after a long day, and also when I had zero motivation. I never told them "you have to do sports." I never needed to. One of them already asks to come with me on Saturday mornings — not because I asked, but because they saw it as normal.
That's not luck. That's modeling. And you can do it too.

🌍 What happened this week

🇨🇴 MMB 2026 · Course record
Erick Sang: 1:01:59 at 8,530 ft 🔥
The Kenyan demolished Geoffrey Mutai's 15-year-old record (1:02:20, 2011) — on the same course you ran last Sunday. What Sang did against altitude and physiology is extraordinary. Melal Siyoum took the women's title.

Cycling · Tour de France
Pogačar wins his 5th Tour de France
Tadej Pogačar sealed his fifth title in Paris, joining Merckx, Hinault, Induráin and Anquetil. Isaac del Toro (Mexico) finished third — the best historical result for a Mexican at the race.

 |
Track · Diamond League
Duplantis in London, Paulino in Monaco
Mondo Duplantis returned to London 8 years after his junior debut, now a double Olympic champion. In Monaco, Marileidy Paulino confirmed Latin America's growing weight in the Diamond League circuit.

 |
Running · Boston Marathon
Boston tightens qualifying standards
The B.A.A. cut 5 minutes from qualifying times for runners ages 18-59 — the most drastic adjustment since 1990. If Boston is on your list, your reference benchmarks just changed.

Triathlon · IRONMAN
IRONMAN gets younger: average age drops to 39
Average participant age dropped from 43 to 39 in 2026. Over 37,000 athletes completed their first IRONMAN in the US and Canada in 2025 — a 12% increase. Endurance keeps growing, and it keeps getting younger.

 |
Track · Anti-doping
CAS upholds Mohamed Katir's 4-year ban
The Court of Arbitration for Sport confirmed the Spanish 5,000m world silver medalist's suspension until February 2028 for falsifying location documents. A reminder that sport's integrity depends on the anti-doping process.
